Has anyone out there had a reaction or side effect to the drug sulfameth / trimethoprim / generic for bactrim? I was recently treated with this drug for a UTI. After taking several doses I develed a couple of red spots on my vulva area with some slight blistering a little further below. My blood test came back negative for herpes but I wondered if anyone has has these side effects or reaction to this drug.

Floopy replied: "A LOT of people have reactions to sulfa drugs. LOTS. Now that that's been established you should get prescribed something else when you get a UTI."

bjpooldog replied: "my daughter developed a rash and itchy reddened throat after taking this drug, they said she must be allergic and has not taken it since."

SerbY G replied: "Iwas prescribed that for Hidradenitis Supprativa... bascially BECASUE I get boils or red bumps.. it is not herpes.. heres some info I gave someone else.... see if that's it. I believe that you have a condition called Hidradenitis Supprativa. It is a condition of re-occurring boils/ cysts/abscesses , that are often misdiagnosed as ingrown hairs, herpes, being unclean and folliculitis. This is a newly diagnosed skin condition , but there is a lot of info out there. Here is a link :... If this sounds like it might be you, READ it, PRINT it out, and TAKE it to your DOC. Its better to try to start treatment soon, it can spread over the body if left untreated. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO POP THEM!! These boils can become quite large and painful. Sometimes even lasting for weeks or months and can spread all over the body. Most common areas are armpits, groin, binkni line, inner legs, and intimate places and basically anywhere that sweats and rub against clothing. Stress is a big inducer. There is some support groups at MSN , and yahoo, and I am open for questions! I have had this for 8 years, I was misdiagnosed for a LONG time, It was very embarrassing, painful and scary. I am just trying to help out so you dont have to wait as long as I did."

Any severe side effects to bactrim? I have just been prescribed bactrim by my doctor and after reading all the possible side effects im a lil nervous to take it. Has anyone ever had any side effects severe or mild?

blacksails replied: "Nah it should be fine. All drugs have a lot of side effects, but usually they don't happen to anyone. If you start using it, and notice any of the side effects, call the doctor. The side effects have to be listed if any one that has taken the medicine has experienced that side effect. So if a rash is a side effect, it could mean that only one person experienced that side effect."

dreamdress2 replied: "Take it with care and monitor yourself to make sure you are not having side effects. I had a painful heartburn and headache when I tried to take it. I finally had to go off and take another type of medicine. Just be careful."

Patientsville P replied: "try sideeffects101.com. They have community comments about side effects and safety polls."

Any bad side effects from taking Bactrim? I took it for an infection and now I wake up in the morning with puffy eyes. In the afternoon my eyelids burn or start peeling. It looks like dry skin or the sh** that builds up around someones eyes after sleeping for a while. I stopped taking it about a week ago btw.

Jenny M replied: "Then stop taking that medicine, it may suitable for others but not for you.You may get more illnesses than you wanted to cure.No side effect so far but the tabs just not the right one for you"

gangadharan_nair replied: "Co-trimoxazole is a combination of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, a sulfa drug. It eliminates bacteria that cause various infections, including infections of the urinary tract, lungs (pneumonia), ears, and intestines. It also is used to treat 'travelers' diarrhea.' Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Co-trimoxazole may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: * upset stomach * vomiting * loss of appetite If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately: * skin rash * itching * sore throat * fever or chills * mouth sores * unusual bruising or bleeding * yellowing of the skin or eyes * paleness * joint aches Please see the web pages for more details on Co-trimoxazole (generic name) Bactrim (brand name)."

bactrim what are the side effects? what are the side effects of bactrim and what can cause blood in the urine besides a womans menstrual cycle

grimmyTea replied: "Bactrim can have a lot of the same side effects that other antibiotics do--namely gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and diarrhea. Rashes and headaches are also common. To put things in perspective, these side effects are minor and most people who take Bactrim have no problem tolerating them. There is a risk of some serious side effects such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome (your skin starts falling off) and bone marrow suppression, but these are extremely rare. Besides menses, blood in the urine (hematuria) can be caused by urinary tract infections, kidney stones, various kidney disorders like polycystic kidney disease and glomerulonephritis, urinary tract cancers, certain parasites, and certain drugs. Bactrim is commonly prescribed for treatment of urinary tract infections, certain pneumonias, infections with methicillin-resistant _Staph. aureus_, and certain gastrointestinal infections. It is commonly prescribed prophylactically for people with recurrent urinary tract infections, people at risk for _Pneumocystis_ pneumonia (transplant and AIDS patients), and people traveling to areas known for traveler's diarrhea."

rnrayunretired replied: "Common side effects of Bactrium are: Appetite loss; diarrhea; nausea; skin sensitivity to sunlight; vomiting. Less common side effects are: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blistered, peeling, red, or swollen skin; bloody or black, tarry stools; chest pain; chills, fever, or sore throat; decreased urination; depression; hallucinations; irregular heartbeat; joint or muscle pain; painful or stiff neck; purple patches under the skin; seizures; severe diarrhea; severe or persistent cough; severe or persistent headache; severe or persistent nausea or vomiting; shortness of breath; stomach cramps/pain; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; unusually pale skin; vaginal irritation or discharge; yellowing of the skin or eyes. Blood in the urine is probably caused from the urinary tract infection."

I was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, and I was prescribed Bactrim. Any side effects with this drug The pre ion is Bactrim Double Strength twice a day for 3 days. I am scared to take medication, I don't even take aspirin for a headache, so I was just wondering if this drug has alot of side effects.

Tiamat replied: "Yes, there are side effects, some serious, though most people are fine with this drug. Like everything, though, it is good to be watchful and immediately report anything weird to your doc. "

bebenceto replied: "i don't know. for mine i had to drink a lot of cranberry juice"

buffoon replied: "Try "Drug Digest" on the internet."

irishfox2 replied: "I am not a doc and this is not medical advice. Now that that info is out there, I'll tell ya what I did. I had a UTI recently also and I went to Walmart... bought Super Concentrated Cranberry fruit 1680 mg plus vitamin C in the vitamin section of course. The UTI was gone in 3 days. I took 3 capsules 3 times a day.. normal dose is about 2 caps 3 times a day....symptoms subsided the first day, even better the second, gone the 3rd. It's a natural cure. I hope you feel better soon. :) Oh and if you are prone to these infections like many others, you can take cranberry regularly to prevent them too. You can also drink cranapple juice. It really does work."

jasomsaso replied: "Common side effects are: Increased sun sensitivity. Rashes. Upset stomach. Rare but serious side effects include destruction of red blood cells and severe skin rashes."

bactrim side effects? I was prescribed bactrim for my mild acne. Does it cause hepatitis? I know that can't be possible, but I read about it on the internet, and what are the complete side effects?

cutiepie81289 replied: "no bactrim is pretty safe to take I've taken it in the past. you may get dizzy or feel alittle nausea but it will pass"

Susan Yarrawonga replied: "Have you tried a Yahoo search for bactrim + "side effects"?"

Are there any non-drug methods I could use to get rid of these awful Bactrim side-effects? I have been on Bactrim for about three days now for a urinary tract infection. The first day I took it, nothing happened, the second day however, was followed by lovely late-afternoon vomiting and nausea. The third day I had the worst headache ever, with the same sensation of nausea. I refused to take it today after doing my research and finding that these symptoms are in fact the most common side-effects of Bactrim. Even though I haven't taken it today, I still feel like crap. Is there any way besides Motrin which isn't helping at all to get rid of this head ache?

PowPowPow7 replied: "It's probably best to just let time go by and you'll feel better. But I assume Bactrim is an antibiotic, and you're usually supposed to not just stop taking antibiotics.."

Donna replied: "You need to call your doctor, because you are having a sensitivity to the drug if not an allergy to it. They took me off Bactrim/Sulfa drugs just because I would get headaches after two days of treatment. And they list it as an allergy now when I am admitted to the hospital. And your headache is also because of your UTI. Try ice packs and lay down in a dark, quiet room. Also take the Motrin."

yessaipan replied: "UTI's are not pleasant and antibiotics that most doctors prescribe are not that effective, especially if you have used antibiotics in the last year. With those side effects, you need to stop taking the Bactrim and find a better medication. My personal choice is to use a natural solution rather than a chemical drug. If you are willing to try a natural method here's what you do. It does work on most people, many are cured within 6 to 24 hours. If you are not a fan of natural cures then call your doctor and get a different pre ion. Eat cranberries and unsweetened cranberry juice. The juice alone doesn't work well. You could put the cranberries in a blender to make it easy to drink. Fresh is best, but frozen will do and it needs to be the whole cranberry. (kills the infection, antibiotic) Some say parsley and castor oil is effective for the discomfort, I have no experience with it. Eating lots of parsley itself is very effective on the discomfort and on getting rid of UTI. (kills infection and relieves pain) Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda in some unsweetened cranberry juice or water and drink. Dolomite also works fairly well. Most claim relief within hours. (reverses the acid and kills infection) Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. (helps move infection out) Eat good yogurt daily to replenish good bacteria or take a good probiotic. (replenishes good bacteria) Take about 3 tablespoons of extra virgin coconut oil daily. You can get it in capsule form. (balances acid, kills infection, antibiotic) Do the cranberries and baking soda for the quickest recovery. The other will also help and may prevent further UTI's. You will tend to get UTI's when your body becomes acidic, then the doctors give you an antibiotic that further kills the good bacteria that keeps you healthy. By making your body alkaline and replenishing the good bacteria, the infection goes away and health is restored. UTI's are preventable and very treatable. My daughter's UTI last week went away with one dose of Dolomite in cranberry juice. Good luck."

Help with Bactrim side-effects? I have a severe infection that meant I got prescribed Bactrim 1600mg/day for 2 weeks followed by 800mg/day for 4 more weeks. I'm on day 5 and I feel like I'm dying. I have a rash, severe nausea, headaches, dizziness, a bit of joint pain, and generally feel like crap. I have to be outside in the sun for at least an hour a day so I'm also worried about the sun sensitivity (I'll be wearing sleeves and sunscreen though). The thing is, I can't change pre ions because the infection is pretty severe, nothing else has worked and I can't see a doctor again until about May 8th. I'm normally sensitive to side effects, so this doesn't suprise me, but I have finals coming up and this is wiping me out. Stopping the meds isn't an option due to the severity. Any way to lessen these effects?

TweetyBird replied: "I don't what sort of infection you have, so I couldn't say with certainty if what you're experiencing is a result of the Bactrim or the infection. I do suggest, however, that you at least report this to your prescriber."

took bactrim ds this morning....strange side effect or a strange symptom of this infection that i cant get r? I guess that I would describe it as the feeling of "water droplets" running down my body.....different parts, at different times. Too weird for me !!!!! What do u think besides the fact that I should be locked up??

LINDA R replied: "Call your doctor. It could be a reaction to the medication."
